supporters you might want to look away for this part. in swing state virginia president obama is up by two points. in swing state new hampshire, it's president obama up by five points. in swing state pennsylvania, it's president obama up by seven points. do we still call michigan a swing state? mitt romney supporters you can drop your hands from in front of your eyes here. the latest poll in michigan has mr. obama up by four in michigan. which is a lot less than the 12-point and 14-point leads the president has also had in michigan polls there this month. but for what it's worth, i should also tell you we have national polls. for the national polls mitt romney supporters it's time for the finger vision. president obama up by five points. that's the fox news poll. the gallup dayly tracking poll had been quite close recently. now gallup shows president obama up by six. even really quite ostentatiously republican leaning rasmussen poll gives president obama a one-point advantage nationally. basically across the board in the polls that matter, in the states that matter, the obama campaign is a

romney ads all the time. so are you, north carolina and nevada and florida and ohio and virginia. the eight states that are being targeted in the ad campaign, an ad campaign so big the campaign describes it as a carpet bombing. and this list of states, the states you see marked on the map right here, that is pretty much where the election is going to be fought from here on out. this map, you will notice, doesn't include all of the places we have been thinking about and talking about as swing states. the romney is not placing ads in michigan, wisconsin or pennsylvania. the super pacs have pulled their ads from michigan. romney is trailing in michigan by as much as seven points there. the pro romney pac money has dropped out of pennsylvania where romney is also behind in the polls. the romney campaign and pacs together, of course, have more money than god and mick jagger combined, so they could still decide to spend money wherever, whenever. this almost have infinite resources in terms of ad dollars in this campaign season. unless something changes in their strategy, it looks like

at an appearance in virginia. when buzz feed pressed the romney campaign about this sudden culture can war shift in the campaign, a spokesman insisted, quote, the subject has been the economy, it is the economy, and it will be the economy. so then why do you have him appearing with pat robertson? there's the issue right now of the romney campaign's focus. what issues they are trying to get people to decide the election on. but there's also the issue of the campaign's message. this very simple issue of whether or not the candidates know what to say when they are asked basic questions about what they are running on. i mean they almost accidentally started running on legalizing pot this weekend. for about 18 hours, they were running on that. conceivably, that might work, by don't think that's what they meant to do. on sunday romney went on "meet the press" and said that republicans made a big mistake when they voted in congress for the sequester. the big debt deal that entails a lot of defense cuts. mr. romney said republicans who vetoed for that made, in his words, quote, a big mistake. one of the

's current standard bearer. republican senate candidate george allen of virginia in his debate this afternoon was asked about mitt romney and his 47% of the country sees themselves as victims who can't be persuaded to care for their lives comment. here's how george allen handled it. he said, quote, i have my own point of view, and my point of view is people of america don't look at themselves as victims. even before today's debate, george allen had already been trying to distance himself from his own party's presidential ticket saying mitt romney and paul ryan are wrong on the issue of medicare. basically all of the senate republican candidates in closely contested races right now are running against mitt romney. it's not just republican george allen in virginia saying, i don't think americans see themselves as victims. it's also republican dean heller in nevada saying about mitt romney, quote, i just don't view the world the same way he does. it's also republican linda mann in connecticut, i disagree with romney's insinuation. it's linda lingle in hawaii, i'm not responsible for the comments

. in virginia also by 5 points. in north carolina it's mitt romney by 6 points. in florida it's obama with a 2-point lead, in pennsylvania obama with an 11-point lead, in yoe, in wisconsin it's 2 points obama, in colorado it's obama by 1, in nevada, the president leading by 3 points. are you noticing a trend? how about this, the issues on which the voters are deciding the race also look good for the president. a brand new poll shows that obama is erasing mitt romney's edge when it comes to who voters trust more on the economy. he went up to 30 percent after the convention now he is back down 26%. president obama has a 42-point lead in latino voters. so when you look at all those things together, you can understand why people who want president obama to be re-elected feel like things are going their way. but if you want to be realistic about what's going on here, there's one dynamic and two numbers that you need to sort of get your head around. the dynamic is that those polls do say one thing when you look at them as a snapshot, just a moment in time. but it makes more sense to look at them in
